DeFonte’s Sandwich Shop original location opened in Red Hook in 1922, 92 years ago. Defonte’s is the oldest surviving eatery in the Red Hook, serving massive, old-school Italian heroes like the Nicky Special, which marries Capicola, Salami, Provolone and Fried Eggplant.

That ferry may not carry many people who live in other parts of the city, but it is very popular with tourists, who take advantage of its free fare to get a close-up look at the Statue of Liberty. At the request of the Staten Island borough president, James Oddo, the city’s Independent Budget Office produced a study last month of the feasibility of charging out-of-towners to ride the ferry.

If you have not been to the NYC Arts Cypher yet, you have another reason to visit. Overspray recently opened in and as part of the Cypher to provide a unique event space, collective work and play space for local artists and visiting artists alike.

This coming Saturday, December 13th, is the last Second Saturday of 2014 along the Bay Street Corridor in the North Shore. Sure to again be an eventful day, the highlighted venues included here will be hosting art exhibitions, artist markets, dance, spoken word, and other arts inspired events.
