1960s

With Memorial Day Weekend in full swing, some people like to bring up the annual Staten Island Memorial Day Parade and get wistful about years gone by.

Many of you are probably too young for this, but back in 1960 there was a mid-air collision over Staten island, and one of the planes crashed into Staten Island’s Miller Air Field (Now, Miller Field.)

Take a look at a 1960’s film showcasing what it was like to take a trip on the Staten Island Ferry back in the 1960s. It’s interesting to see how things have changed, and maybe moreso to see how things have remained the same in the time since this was shot.

Staten Island has been in the news a lot lately, for the upcoming revitalization of the north shore. This is not the first time that the rest of New York took an interest in our borough. Back in the 1960s shortly after the construction of the Verrazano Bridge, NY Illustrated (a television show that ran from 1967 through the 70s) put together this piece about how the island was, essentially, built.
